How to Get Oil Stains Out of Your Sweatshirt (And Your Life)

by Luca Smith 27 Jan 2025

There are few moments more panic-inducing than realizing you’ve just christened your favorite sweatshirt with an oil stain. Whether it’s from that perfectly greasy slice of pizza or a poorly aimed fry, oil stains are the little villains of the laundry world. But fear not, dear sweatshirt savior! You don’t need to sacrifice your cozy companion to the stain gods. Here’s a simple guide to bring your sweatshirt back from the brink of oil-induced doom.

Step 1: Don’t Panic (Unless You Want To Look Suspicious)

Take a deep breath. You’re not dealing with an apocalyptic stain here. Grab a napkin, paper towel, or the closest absorbent thing (no, not your friend’s sweatshirt) and gently blot the oil. Blot, don’t rub—this isn’t the time to start an art project on your clothes.

Step 2: Raid Your Kitchen Like a Stain-Fighting Ninja

Look for dish soap. That magical potion that battles grease on your plates can do the same for your sweatshirt. Apply a tiny amount directly to the stain and gently work it in with your fingers. Feel free to channel your inner mad scientist here. Let it sit for about 10 minutes to let the soap do its thing.

Step 3: Sprinkle the Magic Powder (It’s Not What You Think)

If the stain is being extra stubborn, it’s time to bring in the secret weapon: baking soda or cornstarch. Sprinkle it generously over the stain and let it chill for 10–15 minutes. This step is like the spa treatment for your sweatshirt, except instead of cucumber slices, it’s powder.

Step 4: Scrub-a-Dub-Dub

Take a soft brush or an old toothbrush (don’t use the one you still use, unless you’re a chaos-loving daredevil) and gently scrub the stained area. You’re not sanding a piece of wood—be kind to your sweatshirt.

Step 5: Wash Like You’ve Never Washed Before

Throw the sweatshirt into the washing machine and wash it on the hottest setting it can handle. If you’re not sure, check the tag. If there’s no tag, send a prayer to the laundry gods and use warm water. Add detergent and let the machine work its magic.

Step 6: Air Dry Like a Champ

When it’s done washing, resist the urge to toss it in the dryer right away. Dryers can lock in stains forever, and we’re trying to avoid that. Instead, let it air dry and inspect the results. If the stain is gone, congrats! You’re a laundry legend. If not, repeat Steps 2–6 like the determined hero you are.

Bonus Tip: Prevention Is the Best Cure

If you’re prone to food-based catastrophes, consider wearing a bib. (Kidding… kind of.) Or just embrace the chaos of life. After all, a few stains build character—or at least make for a good story.

Oh, and by the way, if you ever feel like treating yourself to a ridiculously comfortable sweatshirt that might just make you want to roll around in oil for fun, you might find something over at Slick Cloth. Just saying. No pressure.
